Dr. Stephanie Mayer is a dual fellowship–trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip preservation, adolescent and young adult sports medicine, and complex injuries of the hip, knee, and shoulder. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Colorado, a team physician for the University of Denver and University of Colorado Boulder, and a team physician for the Colorado Avalanche of the NHL.

Board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Mayer has advanced training in both sports medicine and pediatric orthopedics, with focused expertise in hip preservation across all ages. She performs minimally invasive arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures for femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears, cartilage injuries, ligament injuries of the knee, patellar instability, meniscal tears, and shoulder instability. She has a special interest in treating athletic injuries in children, adolescents, and young adults, with a philosophy centered on patient-focused care and safe return to sport.

Dr. Mayer earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, completed residency at Duke University Medical Center, and pursued fellowship training in sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery and in pediatric orthopedics at the University of Colorado/Children’s Hospital Colorado. She also completed a traveling fellowship in hip preservation in Zurich, Switzerland.

An active researcher, Dr. Mayer has published more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters. Her ongoing academic work focuses on improving outcomes for hip and knee preservation procedures in young athletes.
