Marc Tompkins, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota, where his clinical practice focuses on sports medicine. He specializes in knee and shoulder repair and reconstruction, cartilage restoration, and treatment of sports-related injuries to the ankle and elbow.
Dr. Tompkins earned his medical degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center before completing his residency in orthopedic surgery at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown Alpert Medical School. He went on to pursue advanced fellowship training in both orthopedic trauma at Brown and sports medicine at the University of Virginia.
His research interests include patellar instability, multiligamentous knee injuries, cartilage regeneration, osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), shoulder instability, rotator cuff repair, and biceps-labral complex pathology. A leader in the field, Dr. Tompkins currently serves as Chair of the Research on Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Knee (ROCK) group and is active in several national and international societies, including AOSSM, AANA, ISAKOS, ESSKA, PRiSM, and the International Patellofemoral Study Group.
Recognized for his contributions, Dr. Tompkins was awarded the AOSSM Traveling Fellowship to South America in 2017 and has received multiple institutional research grants to support his work on knee biomechanics, meniscus healing, and biofeedback technology for rehabilitation. He is board certified in both orthopedic surgery and the subspecialty of orthopedic sports medicine.
